Folksongs arranged by Vaughan Williams, Rutter
Join us for a summer evening of wonderful English choral classics. Stanford's The Bluebird, with a soaring soprano solo, is particularly well-known and evocative of the summer landscape. Tippett's uplifting Spirituals arrangements are taken from his oratorio A Child of our Time, and Britten's songs show the composer as an accomplished setter of English pastoral poetry. The Mass in G minor reflects the influence of plainsong and folksong on Vaughan Williams' melodic writing.
At 7pm we will be performing the ancient evening service of Compline from the ruins of St Mary's Abbey in the Museum Gardens. Arrive at St Olave's to reserve your seat first (and perhaps check on the weather situation!).
