Based on The Ebor Singers' popular candlelit concerts held in the Chapter House of York Minster and taking the lead from Britten's Ceremony of Carols, this collection draws on the rich tradition of Christmas words from the Middle Ages to the present day that has provided and continues to provide such a fertile source for composers of the twentieth century and modern day.
The Ebor Singers
The singing is expressive throughout the recording space suits the music perfectly: there is a good sense of space and the building carries the voices well. This excellent disc is a worthy addition to the Boreas catalogue, and for that matter, any CD collection. Choir Schools Today
An attractive disc....The Ebor Singers give an accomplished and enjoyable performance Gramophone
...a fresh-voiced account of Britten's 'A Ceremony of Carols' with a generous clutch of warm-up items. Their technical credentials are evident in the impeccable unanimous plainchant of Joubert's 'There is no Rose', their interpretative intelligence in an arrestingly nuanced and pitch perfect account of Leigton's 'Lully Lulla'. BBC Music Magazine (4 stars)
A Ceremony of Carols was recorded on 16th, 17th and 18th July 2007 in St Chad’s Church, York. Recording & Engineering: Christopher Barlow With thanks to Canon Simon Stanley
