York Minster
From Roman times to the present day the site on which
York Minster stands has been at the very centre of England's
religious and political life. It is the largest Gothic cathedral
north of the Alps. The Chapter House, built in the Decorated
Gothic style and octagonal in shape, was begun in 1260 and
completed in 1286. Its walls contain some of the Minster's
finest carvings, most dating from between 1270-80.

Markenfield
Hall, Ripon
Markenfield is a
completely moated and fortified Manor House built in 1310.
This was once the seat of a family of that name, of whom,
Sir Ninian, was present at the battle of Flodden Field, in
the year 1513 . When Sir Thomas Markenfield joined in the
Rising of the North against Queen Elizabeth in 1569, his estate
was forfeited; and he, with many others, fled abroad. Tthe
family estates were confiscated and the property was eventually
acquired by Fletcher Norton, a lawyer and politician.
He was created Lord Grantley of Markenfield in 1782 and today
the house is still in the hands of his descendants.
As the manor house was not the main residence of most of its
owners from the 16th century onwards the 14th century buildings
have survived remarkably intact.
How to get there:
From Ripon, follow
the A61 to Harrogate. The turning to the Hall is about
3 miles south of Ripon.
