Minster under Siege: music from the English Civil War

York Minster has faced many threats over the centuries, but few can compare to the events during the Siege of York in 1644, when the Minster was bombarded by during a Sunday morning service! Several contemporary accounts describe how the Scottish army, using cannons on the roof of nearby St Olave's Church, fired on the Minster deliberately when members of the army were attending a service there. The Ebor Singers will be performing music heard on that very Sunday service, in a concert of readings and music tracing events of the English Civil War. Says the choir's director Dr Paul Gameson, ‘There is a wonderful description of the service on Trinity Sunday during the siege, when choir and congregation including generals, nobles and commoners, all sang psalms with great camaraderie – all while bullets ricocheted around the building. With help from the Sealed Knot and the audience we look forward to recreate this atmosph ere!' The choir will be singing music by Gibbons, Tomkins, Purcell, then Minster Organist John Hutchinson and composer of Charles I, William Lawes, present at York during the Siege and killed in 1645 during the Siege of Chester.

The concert is promoted by the York Archaeological Trust and is part of the English Civil War Festival, which is running from 22-31 August. Tickets for the concert (£12, £10 concessions, £5 students) are available on the door or in advance from York Minster Box Office (telephone: 01904 557200).   On Friday 28 August, members of the choir and the Sealed Knot are singing drinking and marching songs from the period in York Brewery.  Tickets, costing £5, are available from the Jorvik Booking Office (01904 615505).

YORK CHOIR ON SONG FOR GERMANY

York-based chamber choir The Ebor Singers put the Eurovision Song Contest to shame during their recent tour to Germany at the end of May. The choir received ‘maximum points’ from their hosts, with local newspaper headlines including “Brillanter Klang” and “Dynamische Bandbreite”.

The choir’s Director, Dr Paul Gameson, said: “The tour was a huge success. Our programme of early and modern English church music received long standing ovations wherever we went, and our hosts welcomed us like VIPs.”

The Ebor Singers were invited to Germany by Kultursommer, a summer-long arts festival in the Rhineland, and performed four concerts across the region in as many days. Despite a heavy schedule, the choir found time to take a cruise up the Rhine and enjoyed an exclusive wine-tasting at a Riesling vineyard overlooking the Rhine.

Now returned to York, the choir are preparing for their final concert of the 2008-9 season, on Saturday 13 June in the York Guildhall, which celebrates the double anniversary of Handel’s death (1759) and Purcell’s birth (1659).  Music includes Handel’s Dixit Dominus, and Purcell’s Rejoice in the Lord.
